Reactions to the Assassination of Charlie Kirk

European conservatives have expressed their condolences and support for the family of Charlie Kirk, a 31-year-old political organizer and advocate for free speech, who was fatally shot at a debate event in Utah on Wednesday. Former President Donald Trump commented on the tragedy, noting that it was a stark reminder of the “complete despair” of those unable to defeat him in debate.

Nigel Farage, the British leader who played a role in establishing Turning Point UK in 2019, shared his deep sadness over Kirk’s death and recounted his memories of meeting him ten years ago. Farage noted, “I met Charlie Kirk and spoke at a meeting he organized. He was a significant voice, deeply valued by President Trump and many young Americans.” He added that Kirk’s work made a lasting impact on American youth who embraced strong values.

Farage went on to lament that it was a “dark day for American democracy, western democracy, and freedom of speech.” He cautioned that while the U.S. seems deeply polarized, there remains hope for the UK to avoid a similar fate, indicating that there are forces attempting to curtail free speech.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson also spoke out, calling Kirk a new martyr for free speech. He described the murder as a tragic indication of despair among those who couldn’t win arguments against him. Johnson emphasized that Kirk stood for ideas that were once accepted common sense, suggesting he lost his life for boldly expressing the views of many ordinary people in both the US and the UK.

The UK’s current left-wing government members, including Foreign Minister Yvette Cooper, have also commented on the tragedy, extending sympathies to Kirk’s family. However, it’s notable that some members of the government previously contributed to a hostile climate around Turning Point UK when it launched in 2019, suggesting tensions surrounding Kirk’s initiatives.

In Italy, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her shock, characterizing the murder as a “deep wound” for proponents of democracy and freedom. She extended condolences to Kirk’s family and the American conservative movement.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban drew parallels between Kirk’s assassination and the recent attempt on Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico’s life, stating, “We have lost a true defender of faith and freedom,” and attributing Kirk’s death to an international hate campaign by the progressive left.

Other European leaders, like Germany’s Alice Weidel and France’s Jordan Bardella, echoed the sentiment that this violence was fostered by intolerant rhetoric from the left, warning of the implications such attitudes have for democratic societies.

This situation continues to unfold.
