European and NATO Leaders Support Ukraine Amid Trump Meetings

KYIV – Leaders from Europe and NATO convened with Ukrainian officials following their exclusion from discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin. On Sunday, they declared their intention to accompany Ukrainian President Volodyr Zelensky during his crucial consultations with U.S. President Donald Trump.

The announcement came after European leaders expressed their solidarity with Zelensky, as they were set to visit the White House on Monday. This move aimed to ensure that the Ukrainian president would begin his Oval Office meeting on a stronger note than what had been experienced previously back in February.

“Europeans are quite anxious about repeating the scenario from the last Oval Office meeting, so they’re eager to bolster Zelensky’s position,” commented General Dominique Trinkand, a former director at the United Nations from France.

The backing from European leaders signifies strong international support for Ukraine, potentially alleviating apprehensions in Kyiv and various European capitals regarding Ukraine’s role in the peace negotiations Trump wishes to mediate with Russia.

It’s a dynamic power play, as Trinkand noted in a phone discussion, pointing out that this could position Zelensky more favorably in dealings with Trump.

There remains uncertainty about whether all leaders will meet Trump in person. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen mentioned she would participate in discussions at Zelensky’s request. NATO Secretary General Mark Latte is also confirmed to join the meeting.

French President Emmanuel Macron’s office indicated he would travel to Washington to support Zelensky, though it wasn’t clear if he would attend the meeting directly. Similarly, German Prime Minister Friedrich Merz is slated to be part of the European delegation, but his participation in the talks with Trump has not been formally confirmed.

This collective trip underscores the determination of European leaders to advocate for Ukraine following Trump’s recent summit with Putin, highlighting the ongoing tensions and the complex geopolitical landscape.
