UNRWA’s Future in Question as Support Wanes
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), which has been challenged by issues related to terrorism, seems to be facing a precarious future as major European nations, long-time supporters, begin pulling back their backing.
Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic, and Hungary have recently suspended support for the UNRWA Charter updates. Last Friday, Bulgaria and Latvia also joined this trend, with Austria, Romania, and Lithuania opting in on a separate resolution.
Observers have been aware that UNRWA, which focuses exclusively on Palestinian refugees, works closely with Hamas in Gaza. Recent reports revealed that UNRWA had employed Hamas members who participated in the October 7, 2022 attack against Israel, highlighting even deeper connections between the two entities.
In response, Israel has barred UNRWA from operating within its borders, while the U.S. government also discontinued its aid to the agency earlier this year after a period of suspension under President Biden.
Israel’s government took over a former UNRWA center in East Jerusalem due to unpaid taxes, replacing it with its own national flag.
The ability of UNRWA to function in Gaza is severely limited without Israeli cooperation. Nevertheless, over 150 countries still voted last Friday to continue funding the agency.
It’s worth noting that the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) typically supports the resettlement of refugees worldwide; former refugees eventually lose their status and integrate into society. Yet Palestinians, under UNRWA’s charter, are granted indefinite refugee status, which can extend for generations, perpetuating their identity as perpetual victims and keeping them in a cycle of dependency on aid.
What’s puzzling is this: Why are Palestinians in Gaza, which is considered part of Palestine, still categorized as refugees?
After all, aren’t they already home?
UNRWA often appears to be an ineffective relief organization.
Perhaps it’s time for European powers to recognize the absurdity of UNRWA and take the lead in re-evaluating this organization that has shifted from a supposed humanitarian role to one that may enable terrorism.
