Mets Fans’ Standing Ovation for Guardians Pitcher Sparks Controversy

Evan Roberts was taken aback when he witnessed Mets fans applauding Guardians pitcher Gavin Williams after he left the game on Wednesday at Citi Field.

“It’s been almost 24 hours, and I still can’t shake it off. I’m genuinely upset with my fellow Mets fans. Yes, I’m angry,” he expressed during Thursday’s “Evan & Tiki” show.

He pointed out that after giving up a home run and pitching almost eight and a half innings, Williams received cheers from the crowd. “This is baffling,” he elaborated.

When co-host Tiki Barber questioned his frustration, Roberts shot back, “And what’s right, Tik?”

Interestingly, Williams didn’t allow a single hit until a solo homer by Soto in the ninth inning, making the standing ovation feel even more peculiar to Roberts.

Roberts emphasized, “This isn’t about Gavin Williams personally. But if you’re at the game as a Mets fan, shouldn’t you recognize your team’s efforts? Honestly, when do we get to appreciate their work? What kind of support are we giving?”

He mentioned he was seated in the last row of Section 122 and witnessed the crowd’s reaction firsthand.

“When Gavin exited the game, I saw people standing and cheering. It drove me up the wall. I turned to my wife to complain, ‘What’s going on here?’”

Barber responded, “Well, she’s cheering,” which prompted Roberts to exclaim, “Exactly!”

This incident highlights a broader concern among Mets fans, as they’ve struggled to keep pace in the NL East. The Mets are trailing the Phillies by 2.5 games and will be gearing up for a three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers. Following that, they’ll host a six-game stretch against the Braves and the Mariners.
