A cherished Indiana college basketball player tragically died in a car accident late Sunday night, just weeks after she had transferred to a new university to play alongside her younger sister.
The sophomore, Jordan Scott, was driving on State Road 62—approximately 20 miles from her campus—around 12:42 a.m. when her vehicle collided with a utility pole, according to the Warrick County Sheriff’s Office.
Scott had just dropped off a friend when the crash occurred, navigating the unfamiliar and “very curvy” roads of Warrick County, officials shared.
A witness observed her car veer off the road during a sharp turn, crash into the pole, and then rest on its side next to a tree line, as reported by the outlet.
The car sustained “severe damage,” and unfortunately, Scott was declared dead at the scene.
At the time of the accident, she was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
Authorities believe that speed might have contributed to the crash, and her car reportedly went airborne prior to the collision.
The University of Evansville announced the “heartbreaking news” of Scott’s passing on Facebook the following Monday.
“Jordan, a sophomore and valued member of the Purple Aces women’s basketball team, was a beloved part of the University of Evansville community,” the university remarked.
“Her absence is profoundly felt by teammates, coaches, classmates, friends, faculty, and all who had the privilege to know her.”
The athletics department highlighted that Scott’s younger sister, Jayden, also plays for the Purple Aces as a freshman.
“Our thoughts are with her parents, Mario and Amy, her sister and teammate Jayden, as well as other family, friends, and teammates during this challenging time,” the athletics department stated on Facebook.
The university has made counseling and grief support services available for students, athletes, and staff.
A native of Newburgh, Indiana, Scott graduated from Castle High School and played the previous year at Wabash Valley College before transferring to Evansville.
The Wabash Valley College Women’s Basketball team expressed their sorrow on Facebook, stating, “It is with heavy hearts that we share the devastating news of the passing of our beloved player, Jordan Scott.”
Her former teammates remembered her as “an incredible talent on the court” but an even more “remarkable person off it.”
“She radiated joy and passion in our team. Always able to bring a smile to anyone’s face or light up a room. She will be deeply missed by all of us,” they reflected.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Scott’s family and friends during this incredibly tough period. Rest in peace, Jordan.”
Jordan Scott was recognized as a two-time All-SIAC first-team selection and received All-State Honorable Mention honors twice, in addition to being a first-team All-Metro selection, according to her biography on the University of Evansville athletics website.
Additionally, she played club basketball with teams like Swish City, Pocket City, and IGB Select 40 prior to beginning her college career.
