Some Democrats expressed skepticism regarding former Vice President Kamala Harris’ new branding initiative, which was announced on Thursday. In a video, Harris described her campaign as a hub for young people to connect with political leaders and stay informed.
However, not all party members are on board with this direction. One Democrat remarked that they prefer Harris to operate within a more traditional political framework. “Another meme-generating account? That’s really groundbreaking,” said a former aide from the Biden administration.
Since its launch, the account has focused on responding quickly to claims made by President Trump. The team behind it aims to position it as an essential news source for Gen Z.
One former Democratic official commented, “Great team, important goals, terrible candidate.”
The account’s focus has raised questions about how effective it will be in mobilizing voters. Stephanie Feldman, who heads the Office to Prevent Gun Violence, pondered how to evaluate the effectiveness of such content, noting that success can’t simply be gauged by likes or views.
Maya Luna of Progress Libs also criticized Harris, saying she represents everything wrong with the Democratic Party. Meanwhile, there was backlash over a recent joke associated with the account during a CNN panel discussion.
Despite the critiques, some believe the account illustrates the party’s willingness to engage with new media and develop a cohesive message, something that has been lacking in the 2024 campaign so far. Democratic strategist Laurie A. Watkins noted that this could signal serious organizational intentions, emphasizing that voters prioritize clarity and relevant issues like the economy and healthcare.
A former aide advised Harris to concentrate more on her book tours, suggesting she should engage with older audiences instead. “Be cautious of those drawn to your book tours,” the aide commented, suggesting that anyone interested in the presidency should think carefully about their potential candidacy.
