the house advanced a bill that could eventually ban the popular video-sharing app tick tockUnless the owner agrees to cut ties with China.
The House of Representatives passed the bill, also known as the Protecting Americans from Regulatory Applications by Foreign Enemies Act. 352-65 Vote On Wednesday, the bill will be sent to the Senate, where pressure will mount to pass it.
The White House, along with the press secretary, expressed satisfaction with the passage of the bill. Karine Jean Pierre “I’m pleased that this bill is moving forward…I look forward to swift action from the Senate,” he told reporters Wednesday on Air Force One.
It’s unclear whether the Senate will take it up.Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D.N.Y.) did not take a stance when asked about the matter Wednesday, saying only that the Senate would “consider the bill once it comes from the House.”
Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman mark warner (D-Virginia) and Ranking Member Sen. marco rubio (R-Florida) said he would work to pass the House bill in the Senate.
China called the ban on TikTok a “bullying act” and warned it would “come back to attack the United States.”
