Tony Evers Decides Not to Seek a Third Term as Wisconsin Governor
Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers, a two-term Democrat, announced on Thursday that he will not be pursuing a third term, marking the end of a significant 50-year career in public service.
In a video message shared on social media, Evers expressed confidence, stating that he is certain he would win if he chose to run again. However, he emphasized the importance of focusing on his family. “I owe it to my family,” he said, indicating a desire to dedicate more time to them.
“I began my journey as a proud Plymouth Progressive, and that’s who I continue to be. As a science teacher, I eventually transitioned to public office and won five consecutive statewide elections,” Evers reflected.

Continuing in the video, Evers acknowledged the possibility of winning a sixth term but noted that personal calculations about running played a role in his decision. He expressed gratitude towards his family for their support throughout his extensive career.
“The truth is, what I cherish most is not just being your governor but being a husband, a dad, and a granddad,” he added. This sentiment resonates, as many can relate to the feeling of wanting to prioritize family over career ambitions.
Governor Evers Advocates for Change in State Law
Senator Tammy Baldwin, a Democrat from Wisconsin, responded to Evers’ announcement by calling his decision a “deserved retirement.” She praised his dedication to improving education and his leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic, even when faced with significant challenges.
While Evers received accolades from some, he was also criticized by Republicans for his handling of the pandemic. There were notable tensions when he attempted to implement statewide mask and stay-at-home mandates, which the state’s Supreme Court later deemed an overreach of authority.
In his farewell message, Evers hinted at looking towards the future—embracing time with loved ones rather than political ambitions. It’s an interesting mix, leaving some wondering what his next steps might be.
