The difference a year makes. Last season Everton finished one place and seven points above newly promoted Liverpool. This year Liverpool are four places and a whopping 14 points above Everton. They also have a decent opportunity to break the WSL glass ceiling by finishing in the top four. A win today would take them above Manchester United in fourth with five games to go.

Liverpool might already be fourth but for defeat to Everton at Anfield in October, when Megan Finnigan headed the only goal. Everton aren’t a bad team but they have had a bad season. Doing the league double over Liverpool would assuage that a little.

important events
37 minutes Kearns was fouled by Hope on the right side, maybe 30 yards from the goal. Kearns takes the free-kick himself, but it’s too deep and Clarke heads it back.
36 minutes Parry lofted a good ball down the right flank, Roman Haug scored and Liverpool won a corner kick. Kearns’ shot was deflected at the near post and cleared by Hope at the far.
33 minutes The last 10 minutes were better, but it’s still a surprisingly low-key game. A goal could make the game more exciting.
31 minutes A corner kick is cleared and Liverpool break. Kearns tries to run his last defender, Wheeler, but Wheeler does a very good job of getting out of danger.
half an hour Bissell beats Parry with a smooth step-over and hits a low cross which Clarke turns for Everton’s first corner…
29 minutes It was almost a very embarrassing moment for Courtney Brosnan. She was a few miles from the finish line when Finnigan’s pass was intercepted by Roman Haug and he took a shot from about 45 yards out. Brosnan had enough time to rush back and make the save.
26 minutes First shot on target. Clarke swung in a decent cross from the right, which was met by Roman Haug from 12 yards out. Her header was comfortably saved by Brosnan.
25 minutes Missy Beau Kearns delivered a dangerous cross from the right, but there was no one in the middle and it was a goal kick. This was the calmest derby I’ve seen in a long time.
22 minutes When play resumed, Keenan took a shot wide from 25 yards. The game isn’t progressing at all.
20 min It was the fourth time in the first 20 minutes that play was stopped while someone was receiving treatment, this time it was Ceri Holland. I swear to you, I’m not making this up.
19 minutes Everton’s promising build-up from the right ended with Paine overhitting the return pass to Cool.
17 minutes Yes, Brosnan is fine to continue. I think you’ve already earned 5 minutes of extra time.
16 minutes Brosnan is still receiving treatment. She thinks she’s going to keep going. We have yet to see a repeat of the challenge from the Netherlands, as coverage has been relatively sparse. Please don’t shoot me.
13 minutes Brosnan picks up a through ball from Parry, but it is caught by Holland much too late and he is booked. As a result, Brosnan will need further treatment.
11 minutes Courtney is okay to continue. This game got off to a very late start due to injury.
10 minutes Everton’s decent move ended with Bissell’s shot blocked. But now they have a new potential injury, with Courtney Brosnan needing treatment on her right foot.
9 minutes As you might expect given their recent poor run of form, Everton have made an excellent start. Liverpool enjoy a lot of possession without posing too much of a threat.
5 minutes Finnigan returned to the field, still limping.
4 minutes A stoppage in play allows Brian Sorensen to give tactical advice to Heather Payne. Megan Finnigan is being treated, but her movements are slow as she jogs to the sideline.
3 minutes Kearns had a chance in the first half, but his shot from about 12 yards was well blocked.
1 minute After the players take a knee, Rian Kiernan begins the match.
Banzai! There are photos and the game is about to start.
5 minutes left until kickoff And there is no sign that the free agent is still alive. Crossed his fingers, yeah.

preamble
There will be a difference of one year. Last season, Everton finished in first place, seven points ahead of newly promoted Liverpool. This year, Liverpool are four places ahead of Everton and a whopping 14 points ahead of them. They also have a good chance of breaking the WSL’s glass ceiling by finishing in the top four. If we win today, we will move ahead of fourth place Manchester United with five games remaining.
Liverpool may already be fourth, but they lost to Everton at Anfield in October, with Megan Finnigan’s header their only goal. Everton are not a bad team, but they have had a bad season. Doing double against Liverpool in the league will ease that feeling a bit.
kick off 1 p.m.
