Quite the drama … and the real stuff hasn’t even kicked off yet. Sean Dyche was sacked as Everton manager earlier today, just hours before their FA Cup third-round tie against Peterborough, the 53-year-old denied his own Robins-Fergie moment. Leighton Baines, the former left-back and now Everton’s under-18s coach, takes charge tonight alongside Seamus Coleman, which is giving off real 2013/14 vibes.

The more wholesome story of the evening is the possibility of Ashley Young lining up against his son Tyler, who plays as a midfielder for Posh. This interview is very sweet.

That tie kicks off at 7.45pm GMT, alongside Watford’s trip to Fulham, which will see Marco Silva come up against his old side. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed watching the Cottagers this season with all their flair going forward, and reckon they’ve got a decent cup run in them. Before that, Sheffield United host Cardiff City at 7pm, so let’s keep an eye on that, too.

Here’s to the magic of the cup, and the joy it still provides even as it comes up against questions of relevance. For all of Manchester United’s misery last year, it’d be hard to find a supporter who wasn’t ecstatic when they triumphed over City in May.

major events
goal! Sheffield United 0-1 Cardiff (Ashford 18)
The 23rd place in the championship takes the lead in 3rd place! It was sparked by Sheffield United's Reece Norrington-Davies wandering around the ball in his own half, which resulted in a mistake by the defenders. Cardiff's Cian Ashford gave him a hard time, but he still had plenty to do, driving into the area and calmly finishing at his near post, holding off Norrington-Davies. Great composure for a 20 year old.
Fulham vs Watford team
Fulham: Benda, Castagne, Andersen, Cuenca, Sessegnon, Andreas Pereira, Lukic, Smith Rowe, Traore, Rodrigo Muniz, Iwobi
Subs: Leno, Bassey, Diop, Reid, Cairney, King, Godot, Wilson, Jimenez.
Watford: Bond, Andrews, Porteous, Ogbonna, Chikuvic, Larusi, Ince, Kayembe, Dwomoh, Vata, Doumbia.
Subs: Sierralta, Chakbetadze, Louza, Sissoko, Bayo, Morris, Barr, Nabizada, Roberts.
Young (father) and Young (son) both started on the bench. Everton made six changes to their starting lineup in their 1-0 league defeat to Bournemouth.
stephen carr 77 (I don't think it's on the birth certificate) It says: It's nonsense to say the least. ”
everton vs peterborough team
The post-Dish era begins.
Everton: Joanne Virginia, O'Brien, Keene, Branthwaite, Patterson, Mangala, Gueye, Mykolenko, Armstrong, Beto, Ndiayi.
Subs: Begovic, Harrison, Doucoure, Young, Lindstrom, Butterfield, Broja, Levan.
peterborough: Vilokapic, Nevett, Fernandes, Katongo, O'Brien-Brady, Kyprianou, Collins, Hayes, Conn-Clarke, Jones, Dornelly.
Subs: Blackmore, Mothersill, de Havilland, Odo, Lindgren, Sparks, Wallin, Young, Hihiongvien.
The email I received from Edan Tal wasn't particularly hopeful. “The fact that Dyche was sacked really reminds me of Benkies sacking Sam Allardyce for Steve Keane as soon as he came to Blackburn. Relegation quickly followed.”
Speaking of the battle of Young vs. Young.Luke McLaughlin writes extensively about fathers and sons in football.
This is a really nice email from Nicholas Byrne.
Toffee here. I would like to go on record to express my gratitude to Sean Dyche and his team. When he was appointed I wrote that we were finally able to hire an adult and I say that as someone who really wanted Lampard to succeed and Rafa to succeed. I strongly believe that no one other than Dishu could have gotten us through the point deduction. It's definitely the club's fault, but most definitely not his. And he has treated himself with dignity throughout his tenure.
It will be of no consolation to him tonight, but this Everton fan will always be grateful to him. The new owners have already made a big decision about who will be next and we need to trust that they will make the next decision correctly as well. Blues both in front and to the side.
Sheffield United vs Cardiff Team
Sheffield United: Davis, Gilchrist, Baptist, Norrington Davis, Burrows, Blacker, Brooks, Brewster, Marsh, McCallum, Onet.
Sub: Faxon, Hammer, O'Hare, Ahmeddzic, Robinson, Boies, Hampson, Koletin, Aston.
Cardiff: Horvath, Capakio, Fish, Daland, Bagan, Ng, Lars, Colwill, Tanner, Ashford, Etete.
Subs: Turner, Davies, Giles, Siopis, Rinomhota, Robertson, Willock, Jeffries, Pearce.
This is the story of two Championship clubs who have experienced very different seasons. United are third, but Cardiff are tied in the relegation battle with only Plymouth below them.
“Don't you think the club's statement is rather cold?” wrote Phil Gray. “I cannot express my gratitude enough for keeping Everton going for two more seasons in extremely difficult circumstances. I cannot express my warmest wishes for the future.”
I thought the same way because I defended my performance even though I got points deducted. Dyche will bounce back with his standard no-nonsense style.
Incoming news: Amad Diallo has signed a new five-and-a-half year contract with Manchester United. He was one of the few plus players in a pretty tough season.

I have really enjoyed watching all of the Cottage's talent come forward this season and think they have a decent run in the cup competition.
