Margot Robbie is truly setting trends with her unique approach to dressing, and she’s honing this craft even further. During the press tour for the 2024 “Barbie” film, she embraced a doll-like aesthetic. Now, she’s collaborating once again with stylist Andrew Mukamal to promote “Wuthering Heights.” This time, it’s not just about the clothing; the jewelry also shines bright.
Drawing inspiration from Emily Brontë’s classic novel from 1847, Mukamal and Robbie delved into historical archives to evoke the essence of that time.
Let’s explore the stunning accessories she adorned during this tour, along with insights from their creators.
Love Key
For the London premiere, Robbie aimed for an authentic period look. The bracelet was a replica of one that Charlotte Brontë had made after her sisters passed away, incorporating their hair.
In collaboration with master goldsmiths from McCarty London and Wydeen Weaving, who are based in Haworth—where the Brontë family lived—this replica was crafted with painstaking attention to detail.
Murray Tremelen, curator at the Brontë Parsonage Museum, noted, “Instead of traditional braiding, we adopted a diagonal structure. Wydeen developed this using a 100-year-old machine to replicate the hand-braiding technique used 175 years ago.” During the Victorian era, mourning jewelry often contained locks of a loved one’s hair.
Tremelen elaborated, “Hair can endure for thousands of years if properly preserved. Its significance has been recognized for centuries as a token of affection between people.”
Robin Wright, managing director of Wydeen Weaving, explained that matching the original bracelet’s color and texture was quite a challenge. Using human hair wasn’t feasible, and time constraints ruled out custom dyes. Instead, they tested various yarns before finding a blend of polyester and cotton that closely resembled human hair.
The intricacies of getting the braid’s color and texture right were time-consuming. They conducted 12 color trials and made multiple visits to ensure the best match with the original.
Creating the replica took 40 hours of labor, 12 trials, and a staggering amount of thread.
What about the double garnet on the clasp? Tremelen noted, “In the 19th century, gemstones carried intricate meanings. Garnet symbolizes devotion, which might explain its choice for this bracelet. Interestingly, it’s also the birthstone of January, coinciding with Anne Brontë’s birthday.”
Robbie’s custom Dilara Findikoglu dress was also adorned with dyed hair to echo the sentiment of the bracelet. “Hair jewelry represents memory and eternity, just as this dress signifies Emily Brontë’s timeless narrative,” remarked the designer.
Champagne Taste
In Paris, the event demanded a show-stopping accessory, and Robbie delivered with an impressive display of champagne diamonds.
Jeweler Lorraine Schwartz designed a plush red velvet choker specifically to complement Robbie’s Chanel gown, embellished with a significant old mine-cut stone and surrounded by smaller diamonds.
Her accompanying ring was no small feat, boasting 15 carats. As Jonathan Pratt from Dawsons Auctioneers explained, “Champagne diamonds have surged in popularity, valued for their unique tones. A necklace of this quality could fetch between $2.7 million and $4.1 million.”
Wild Hearts
At the Los Angeles premiere, Robbie dazzled in a Schiaparelli gown that paid tribute to a love story of the past, showcasing the Taj Mahal diamond pendant.
The heart-shaped pendant on a Cartier chain bears the inscription “Love is Forever” in Parsi, dedicated to Nur Jahan, who first received it from her husband, the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahangir.
The diamond’s history continued as Shah Jahan later gifted it to his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal, for whom he created the Taj Mahal. It had a romantic legacy, with Richard Burton gifting it to Elizabeth Taylor on her 40th birthday.
The connection of Robbie wearing Taylor’s historical necklace—and a cape that Taylor wore—was lauded as a beautiful homage to love stories that transcend time.
Robbie finished her ensemble with custom earrings featuring 38 carats of old-cut diamonds, crafted by Lorraine Schwartz, a longtime friend of Taylor. A vintage ruby and diamond ring by Fred Leighton was also part of the look.
“The necklace features marquise diamonds and round rubies resembling gemstones that delicately fell onto her nails,” described Chanel nail artist Bettina Goldstein.
Matching Ring
Even before embarking on the “Wuthering Heights” press tour, Robbie and co-star Jacob Elordi expressed their bond through similar jewelry.
The pair revealed matching gold rings, designed by Cece Fein-Hughes. Robbie gifted it to her Australian co-star, featuring a design of intertwined skeletal figures with roses and thorns, alongside a famous quote from Brontë’s work.
This ring symbolizes the enduring love of Heathcliff and Catherine, capturing the idea that their souls are intertwined, as inscribed within it. The tribute to their connection illustrates the timeless nature of their love story.
