Ex-aide Trent Holbrook challenges Eleanor Holmes Norton for D.C. position

Former Aide Challenges Eleanor Holmes Norton in Upcoming Election

A former aide to U.S. Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton, who is a Democrat from Washington, D.C., is entering the race to challenge her as pressure mounts on Norton to step aside. Trent Holbrook, who worked as Norton’s senior legislative adviser, officially announced his candidacy on Monday. While Washington’s congressional seat cannot vote on legislation, representatives are still able to introduce bills.

In an interview, Holbrook explained his rationale for running against his former boss. He mentioned, “I think it’s clear she’s not going to run well,” as he commented on Norton’s potential for re-election.

“I can’t really see myself contesting against Congressman Norton,” he noted further. “If she thought I had a chance of winning, I don’t think I would be in this position right now. But that’s how things stand.” This has become even more pronounced as several prominent House Democrats, like former Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California and Rep. Jerry Nadler of New York, have announced they won’t run for re-election in 2026. Meanwhile, Norton, 88, has chosen not to resign despite calls from some prominent party members urging her to do so.

Donna Brazile, who previously chaired the Democratic National Committee and worked as Norton’s chief of staff, recently expressed her opinion that Norton should retire. In a piece for the Post, Brazile stated, “For the benefit of both her and Washington, D.C., it would be wise for her not to seek re-election after her current term.” She made this call in September, highlighting the need for fresh leadership.

Norton has faced considerable backlash regarding her viability for public office. There have been multiple instances where her office had to clarify her public comments about running for another term in 2026. Adding to her difficulties, she fell victim to credit card fraud in late 2025, when she inadvertently shared her card details with individuals posing as HVAC technicians outside her residence. Her staff mentioned that Norton relies on a “home manager” for scheduling cleaning and maintenance, which led her to believe that the service was indeed booked.
