Ex-Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms wins Georgia governor primary

Keisha Lance Bottoms, the former mayor of Atlanta and a past Biden administration official, has secured the Democratic nomination for governor in Georgia, a crucial state in the Southeast.

According to reports from the Associated Press, Bottoms won a significant number of votes in the recent primary, competing against candidates like former Lieutenant Governor Jeff Duncan, who switched from Republican to Democrat, Jason Estevez, Derrick Jackson, and Mike Thurmond, a former state labor commissioner.

Democrats are eager to end a nearly three-decade dry spell in Georgia’s gubernatorial elections. The last Democratic win was with Roy Burns in 1998. Since then, Republicans have had a stronghold, with governors like Sonny Perdue, Nathan Deal, and Brian Kemp consistently winning elections.

Bottoms, who was the leading candidate in the primary, faced various criticisms during her tenure as mayor, which lasted from 2018 until she chose not to seek re-election in 2022. Instead, she took on a role as a senior adviser and director in the White House Office of Public Engagement under President Biden.

Some of her opponents raised concerns that her challenges as mayor could hinder Democratic efforts to reclaim the governor’s position, especially with midterm elections approaching. These elections often see Democrats mobilizing enthusiastically, while Republicans may grapple with typical political challenges.

The excitement among voters in Georgia is evident, with early voting numbers surpassing one million, showing strong Democratic turnout compared to their Republican counterparts.
