Ex-Auburn professor killed while taking a walk with dog in Auburn park

Tragic Death of Former Auburn University Professor

A former professor at Auburn University was found dead while out walking her dog in a local park on Saturday. The police confirmed that 59-year-old Julie Schnuel was discovered in a wooded area of Kiesel Park, with signs suggesting she had been assaulted. Officers responded after receiving a 911 call about her condition. Thankfully, her dog was reported to be unharmed.

Authorities have arrested 26-year-old Harold Rashad Dabny III in connection with Schnuel’s death, charging him with two counts of capital murder. The police mentioned that they contacted Dabny at around 8:30 AM on Sunday after a detective observed behavior that raised suspicion regarding his involvement in the case. Additionally, Dabny is alleged to have stolen a Ford F-150 truck belonging to Schnuel.

Schnuel had been a professor of veterinary medicine at Auburn University from 2003 until her retirement in 2021. The university released a statement expressing their deep sorrow over her tragic loss, highlighting her contributions as a valued educator and mentor.

Many in the community remembered Schnuel fondly. Ashley Lutter shared that she frequented Kiesel Park daily, saying, “She was always very welcoming and brave.” Lutter described Schnuel as someone who genuinely stood up for others. Another former student, Destinee Bearden Patterson, echoed this sentiment, referring to Schnuel as a unique figure in the veterinary world, emphasizing how much she was missed.

Dabny is currently being held without bond at the Lee County Jail as investigations continue.
