Matthew Colangelo, a former Biden Justice Department official, gave the prosecution’s opening statement in Trump’s criminal trial on Monday.
Democratic New York County District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office recently hired Mr. Colangelo is a former senior Justice Department official who spent years targeting Mr. Trump in his previous job. washington examiner report:
Mr. Bragg did not hire Colangelo for his experience as a white-collar prosecutor, but that experience was lacking when he joined Mr. Bragg’s office. Rather, Mr. Bragg valued Mr. Colangelo’s “extensive knowledge” of the Trump Organization. new york times The report was released in late 2022, around the same time Mr. Bragg was trying to ramp up prosecution efforts against Mr. Trump.
Before his latest stint at the Justice Department, Colangelo worked with Attorney General Letitia James, who investigated Trump for three years before filing a major civil lawsuit against him and the Trump Organization in the fall of 2022. I was working below.
While in James’ office, Colangelo was involved in Trump’s civil litigation and also led federal efforts at the time, including filing lawsuits against the Trump administration and investigating the Trump Foundation.
“This is a witch hunt, it’s a disgrace, and it’s coming out of Washington,” former President Donald Trump told reporters on Monday. He said: “Everything is aligned with Washington, including the prosecutor’s office.”
He added: “I want you to understand that this was done with the intent of hurting the worst opponent of the president in the history of our country.”
Colangelo has a deep history within the Democratic Party. He served as a senior Labor Department official in the Obama administration, joined Biden’s Justice Department, and was appointed acting deputy attorney general when Biden took office. In that role, Mr. Colangelo served as his third-highest ranking official at the department, overseeing the civil rights, civil rights, antitrust and tax divisions, among others.
When Colangelo left the Justice Department to help Bragg, Biden’s attorney general, Merrick Garland, was praised His “wise counsel and good judgment” from day one on the job.
