Ex-British Prime Minister Liz Truss encourages Trump to break up the United Nations

Former British Prime Minister Liz Truss recently urged President Donald Trump to consider dismantling the United Nations, arguing that it has become ineffective and has made several “wrong decisions.” During an appearance on “Fox & Friends First,” Truss stated, “The United Nations has been defunct for many years, and I think there are better uses for the building in New York than what it is currently being used for.”

She specifically mentioned the U.N.’s handling of the Chagos Islands, implying that the tribunal’s opinion that Britain control them was misguided. “I would urge President Trump to start dismantling the organization,” she added. The Chagos Islands were previously controlled by Mauritius in the 1960s.

Truss, who had a short tenure as UK prime minister in 2022, criticized the current Labor leadership for prioritizing international institutions over Anglo-American relations. She expressed a desire for Britain to assert itself, saying, “We should refuse to abide by this judgment,” referring to the U.N.’s decisions. She pointed out that, in Davos, many European leaders seem to be aligned with international organizations, which, she believes, influences nations like China as well.

She claimed a significant number of Brits opposed the transfer of the islands, attributing pressure to leaders and organizations, including Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Recently, tensions have escalated between European leaders and President Trump. Trump had pursued a deal involving Greenland and had threatened tariffs to push negotiations. However, he announced a “framework for a future agreement” regarding Greenland and withdrew the tariff threat.

Truss has voiced approval for this agreement, suggesting it was “meant to happen.” She noted the Arctic’s growing importance due to threats from Russia and China, and she expressed relief that there is now a framework for cooperation with European allies.
