Former Doctor Faces Child Pornography Charges

Federal prosecutors have charged a former doctor from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital with transporting and possessing child pornography. This development came just a day before the state’s medical board revoked his medical license.

Howard M. Searle, 73, made his appearance in federal court in Cincinnati on Tuesday, where he faced these serious allegations. The following day, the Ohio State Medical Board acted swiftly, issuing a permanent suspension of his medical license.

Searle once worked as a geneticist and a scientist specializing in metabolic disorders at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. A statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of Ohio outlined the details surrounding the case.

The investigation began when the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with the FBI’s Child Exploitation Task Force, received cyber tips regarding images of child pornography traced back to Searle’s IP addresses. The disturbing images reportedly included two young girls approximately 10 years old in explicit situations.

As investigators continued to examine Searle’s electronic devices, more than 153,000 images and 470 videos depicting child sexual abuse material were identified. Some of this material involved very young victims, including infants.

Notably, authorities have confirmed that they did not find any evidence linking the child pornography to patients or children associated with Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. However, that hasn’t quelled concerns among local parents.

One parent expressed their shock, saying, “I never thought we’d have to deal with something like this. We entrust our kids to these doctors.” Another parent echoed this sentiment, stating, “I’m furious. Absolutely furious.”

Local law enforcement is reaching out for public assistance. Hamilton County Sheriff Charmaine McGuffy emphasized the thoroughness of their investigation, urging anyone who might have been a victim of Searle to come forward.

Federal authorities are committed to addressing these types of crimes. As stated by FBI Special Agent Elena Iatrola, the agency will continue to investigate individuals attempting to exploit children.

Transporting child pornography is a federal offense that carries a sentence of 5 to 20 years in prison, while possession can result in a maximum penalty of 20 years. Searle was released after his court appearance, as prosecutors did not request bail.
