Former Colorado Teacher Sentenced for Relationship with Student
A former teacher in Colorado has been sentenced to 14 years in prison after reportedly engaging in a sexual relationship with a student. This situation escalated when she maintained contact with the student even after being charged with a crime.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office disclosed on March 19 that Tera Johnson-Swartz, 45, a previous finalist for the State Teacher of the Year in 2025, pleaded guilty to charges of sexual exploitation of a child and cybercrime. The latter charges were believed to arise from her continued interactions with students.
Her relationship with a 16-year-old boy became known in January 2025 when his parents discovered sexually explicit messages exchanged between them. Just five months prior, Johnson-Swartz had been highlighted as one of seven finalists for the prestigious teacher award, which is quite a contrast to the situation at hand.
She faced charges from two separate investigations; one revolved around her inappropriate relationship with the student, and the other focused on her continued communications post-allegations.
Documents reveal that initially, the interactions were just text messages, but things escalated when she provided the student with cigarettes and used marijuana, ultimately leading to physical contact.
After the allegations came to light, she was suspended, fired, and banned from the school. Subsequently, a troubling incident was caught on surveillance footage showing the student entering a car similar to hers. Investigators reported that the boy admitted to being picked up by Johnson-Swartz.
This revelation triggered an investigation, resulting in her arrest for kidnapping a minor and aiding and abetting in connection with the relationship.
She managed to secure bail set at $100,000 through a professional bond officer, gaining her release the next day. However, during the Fourth of July weekend, the boy’s parents alerted authorities that the two were still communicating.
The two reportedly encountered one another twice within consecutive nights and resumed exchanging phone calls and emails shortly after. Eventually, Johnson-Swartz was arrested again.
Beyond her prison sentence, she is said to have received a six-year probation period as a registered sex offender upon release, highlighting the long-term consequences of her actions.
