Ex-Concordia swimmer Legend Storer charged with murder in Maui

Incident in Maui Involves Former College Swimmer

A former college swimmer from California is facing serious charges after an incident at a resort in Maui, Hawaii, where a naked cemetery security guard was found dead hours later. The suspect, identified as Legend Stoller, 20, has been charged with second-degree murder, first-degree robbery using a dangerous instrument, and indecency related to the death of 63-year-old Michael “Mike” Dyer on August 5, as per court documents.

The strange events unfolded around 1:45 a.m., captured on surveillance footage showing a naked man approaching Dyer’s office at a condominium resort located on Lower Honoapiilani Road in Lahaina, according to the Maui Police Department. Reports indicate that Dyer was assaulted before the suspect fled the scene on foot.

By 3:02 a.m., dispatchers received an alert about a naked man wandering near Kahana. Officers soon pursued Stoller, discovering him around 3:35 a.m. with multiple abrasions. He was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center for assessment.

Later, at 5:31 a.m., police were called to the resort where Dyer was found unresponsive and, unfortunately, pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators later connected the wandering man to the earlier incident after reviewing surveillance footage.

While Maui police held off on releasing the suspect’s name due to a Ninth Circuit Court policy restricting the identification of arrested individuals, Hawaii court documents named Stoller as the one facing the charges linked to the August 5 event.

Stoller faces several charges, including second-degree murder and indecency. He pleaded not guilty after an official criminal complaint was lodged on August 7. His first court appearance saw prosecutors request he be held without bail, which was granted, denying his lawyer’s plea for a nominal bail.

Dyer was reportedly working as a security guard at Sons of Kahana when he was tragically killed, as noted by a GoFundMe organized by his family and friends. He and his wife, Joy, had been married for 26 years.

Stoller, a Lahaina native, previously swam for the men’s swimming and diving team at Concordia University Irvine in California. His athletic profile indicated he was a freshman in breaststroke and sprint swimming and graduated from Maui Preparatory Academy in 2024, where he had won two league championships. There were mentions of him transferring from Concordia.

Fox News Digital has reached out to Stoller’s attorneys for further comments, and the investigation continues as Maui Police gather more information.
