Passing of Former Delaware Governor Mike Castle

Mike Castle, the former Republican Governor of Delaware, has died at the age of 86. He was a moderate Republican who notably championed the creation of a popular series of commemorative coins during his time in Congress.

According to Delaware Republicans, Castle passed away in Greenville on Thursday. Unfortunately, no further details have been provided.

Castle had a long and storied career in politics, remaining undefeated in electoral races until his surprising loss in the 2010 primary for the US Senate, a position he sought before Joe Biden became vice president.

During his 18 years in Congress, he gained a reputation as a centrist, fiscal conservative, and social moderate, often pushing the limits of party lines on various issues, such as government spending, environmental policy, and abortion rights.

Representing Delaware in the US House from 1993 to 2011, Castle advocated for a pay-as-you-go approach regarding both spending and tax cuts. He was instrumental in enhancing children’s nutrition programs and initiating educational reforms that sought to benefit learning systems.

One of his key projects in Congress was a commemorative coin program that celebrated the states, starting with Delaware.

Castle earned the nickname “coin councillor” from coin grading services, highlighting his influence in the realm of numismatics. The program he spearheaded not only increased federal revenues but also expanded into honoring presidential dollar coins since 2007 and initiated a quarterly series celebrating national parks and significant natural sites beginning in 2010.

Delaware GOP Chairman Gene Truono remarked, “The Honorable Castle represented the essence of public service through moderation, integrity, and a strong dedication to all Delawareans.” This was highlighted in a statement on Thursday.

Before serving as governor starting in 1985, Castle held roles as a state legislator and lieutenant governor. In honor of his passing, Delaware Governor Matt Meyer has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff next week.

Meyer, reflecting on Castle’s legacy, shared memories of his school visits, recalling the warmth and humility Castle brought to his public service, characteristics that truly defined his career.
