Ex-Dodgers pitcher Julio Urias hit with 5 charges from alleged domestic dispute

Julio Urias was cleared of a felony charge for domestic dispute last September, but he’s not out of the woods yet.

Authorities announced Tuesday that the former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher has been charged with five misdemeanors.

The left-handed man is charged with one count of spousal assault, two counts of domestic battery related to a relationship, one count of false imprisonment and one count of assault.

Urias was placed on indefinite leave by MLB after he was arrested in front of BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, where he was watching a Major League Soccer game. Police first received a call from a citizen who reported an altercation between a man and a woman. Urias was arrested by Department of Public Safety officers on suspicion of felony domestic violence.

During an argument with his wife, Urias “pushed her against a fence and pulled her by the hair and shoulders,” according to the district attorney’s office’s charge evaluation worksheet.

But “neither the victim’s injuries nor the defendant’s criminal history warrant a felony charge,” the document says.

Urias was arrested on suspicion of domestic assault in 2019, and although he was not charged, he was suspended for 20 games.

MLB continues to investigate the incident. No MLB player has ever been suspended twice for violating MLB’s domestic violence policy.

Urias spent the first eight seasons of his MLB career with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He finished third in the 2022 National League Cy Young Award voting with a National League-best ERA of 2.16. He led the majors with 20 wins the year before, but was seventh at the time.

The Mexican-born left-hander started 21 games for the Dodgers in 2023, posting a 4.60 ERA. For his career, Urias has a 3.11 ERA in 158 games (122 starts) and a 60-25 regular season record.

Urias won the World Series with the Dodgers in 2020.

The Dodgers were able to fill the void left by Urias’ absence by signing Yoshinobu Yamamoto to the richest contract in pitcher history and also trading for Tyler Glasnow. They also signed Shohei Ohtani, who is expected to return to the mound in 2025.
