Charlotte, North Carolina – The former Duke University football player allegedly confessed to having killed his former high school friend and a real estate agent Whitney Heard in Charlotte, North Carolina, according to a police affidavit.
Police found Heard, 32, dead in a townhome in Charlotte's upscale South Park neighborhood on July 14 last year, responding to a call for medical assistance that afternoon. Her way of death was ruled and murdered.
On March 3rd of this year, 33-year-old Brandon Braxton filed a written complaint with Mecklenburg County Jail officials, saying, “I killed Whitney Heard,” the affidavit states.
When authorities discovered Heard last July, they noticed her car and phone were missing.

Heard's neighbors appeared to have seen a white BMW away from home on the afternoon of July 4th, 2024, with no one in the passenger seat. The neighbor advised police that Heard not to let others drive the car.
The Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Station (CMPD) has obtained a search warrant for the Heard mobile phone and has received the last known location data. The detective couldn't find the phone, but the case was still inside the car.

Fingerprints from Hard's vehicles were collected and processed, and Braxton was placed in the vehicle and residence.
Heard's friends and family told police that she and Braxton were friends at Providence High School, but “we lost years of contact.” Recently, Braxton has clearly begun to appear at Heard's residence, they said.

According to the Duke Athletics website, Braxton was a wide range of Duke recipients between 2010 and 2013.

In one incident, Braxton appears to have fallen asleep in the driveway of Heard when she refuses to let him inside. Heard also called police and told family and friends when Braxton tried to break into her residence earlier.
In July 2024, Braxton was arrested and charged in connection with theft of a car in Pineville, a town near Charlotte. Braxton was arrested and released four times before he was ultimately charged with murder on March 20th, according to court records.

On August 8th last year, detectives interviewed him, saying that they “signed Braxton from prison.”
“He said that the last time she saw Whitney, she looked stoned.”
“Braxton said he and Whitney had once hanging out in high school. He was not in her car, but never in her residence. He nodded positively when asked if he knew what had happened to Whitney and whether she hadn't provided any details about the current situation.

In January, Braxton was once again arrested in Pineville on charges of police trespassing and resistance. The Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office took him into custody.
Following his confession on March 3, the detective said, “We reviewed the video surveillance provided by the prison where Braxton showed him using kiosks in prison on 0854 hours a day.

Her obituary said that Heard was a real estate agent and a beloved daughter, sister, aunt and friend. “Her smile and laughter was contagious and you couldn't help him to be drawn to her,” the obituary said.
