Former ESPN announcer Trey Wingo came under fire on Monday for his comments regarding the just-reported contract extension signed by Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker.
Butker and the Chiefs reportedly agreed to a four-year contract worth $25.6 million, the largest in NFL history, with $17.75 million guaranteed, the largest for a kicker. Butker led the Chiefs to three Super Bowl victories following the 2020 season.

But Butker’s offseason was filled with drama surrounding her faith-based commencement speech at Benedictine University, in which she urged women to embrace the title “housewife” and delivered a scathing critique of President Biden, adding that “abortion, IVF, surrogacy, euthanasia, and the growing support of corrupt cultural values and media all stem from widespread disorder.”
Wingo used the news of Butker’s contract extension to criticize his speech.
“Harrison Butker’s contract extension made him the highest-paid kicker, highlighting an essential truth in the NFL: the better you are at your job, the more teams are willing to put up with you purely for good,” he wrote on X.

NFL fans criticized Wingo’s “willingness to put up” comment because Butker has never been arrested or convicted of a crime, but instead has given speeches that have been praised by some and backlash from others.
Over his seven-year career, he has made 89.1 percent of his field goals and 94.5 percent of his extra-point attempts, but last season was his best, making 38 of 38 PAT attempts and 33 of 35 field goals (a career-best 94.3 percent).

He made 4 of 4 field goal attempts in Super Bowl 53, including two game-tying kicks in the fourth quarter, including one that sent the game into overtime with three seconds left in the game.
