James Comey Indicted by Federal Grand Jury

Former FBI Director James Comey has been indicted by a federal grand jury in the Eastern District of Virginia.

The indictment includes two counts:

  • Making false statements to Congress — perjury
  • Obstruction of justice

This indictment arises from Comey’s testimony on September 30, 2020, concerning the FBI’s handling of the Trump–Russia investigation.

Federal prosecutors allege that Comey made inaccurate statements regarding the origins and actions of “Crossfire Hurricane,” the FBI’s probe into supposed Russian interference in the 2016 election, which aimed to link Russia to Donald Trump’s campaign.

Newly appointed U.S. Attorney Lindsey Halligan is believed to have advanced the indictment, presenting the case to a grand jury shortly before the expiration of the five-year statute of limitations.

Comey is expected to appear in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia, for an arraignment soon.
