Ex-Georgia lieutenant governor switches to the Democratic Party

Former Georgia Lieutenant Colonel Jeff Duncan has shifted his political allegiance to the Democrats, which he indicated had been a developing change for some time, particularly after he stepped back from the GOP.

In an op-ed published by the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Duncan reflected on his journey towards the Democratic Party, noting it began before President Trump’s attempt to “steal” the 2020 presidential election.

“There’s no specific date when my political views shifted, but I certainly feel it,” Duncan stated. He emphasized that his decision stemmed from his daily struggles to advocate for his neighbors while identifying as a Republican.

Duncan pointed to various policy issues that swayed his opinion, including healthcare, Medicaid, assistance for the impoverished, gun control, and immigration. He expressed that his time in elected office made him realize that effective public policy is vital for genuinely caring for one’s community.

He highlighted that many uninsured Georgians reside in working households, yet they lack health insurance due to affordability or eligibility challenges, asserting, “In reality, they have jobs but may not have the right job.” This comment addresses the types of employment that offer health benefits or sufficient income to afford private plans.

Duncan criticized Trump’s administration, mentioning how his “big, beautiful bill” managed to leave Medicaid funds unattended and slashed millions from this necessary program. He also called out cuts affecting nutritional assistance, a decision that could impact children’s access to meals at school.

He condemned Trump’s immigration policies, referencing polls that demonstrate wide support for gun control initiatives, like Universal Background Checks and the Red Flags Act. Additionally, he suggested that immigration policies need to prioritize border security, with legal actions against those committing felonies, while still paving a path towards citizenship for others.

Duncan’s change in party affiliation follows his expulsion from the Georgia Republican Party after supporting former Vice President Harris in the upcoming presidential election. He also notably addressed the Democratic National Convention in August in her favor.

The former state legislator has openly criticized Trump and the GOP, particularly regarding the attempts to overturn the 2020 election results and the January 6 Capitol attack. He decided against seeking re-election in 2022.

“The reasons behind my shift to the Democratic Party keep piling up,” he concluded. “Ultimately, my choice positions me best to love my neighbor each day.”

Duncan’s transition adds to a small but notable trend of former political figures moving from the Republican Party to the Democrats in recent months.
