The Reformed British Party, led by Nigel Farage, has gained another experienced member just a day after launching its “Sector for Government Preparation.” The party is urging knowledgeable individuals to aid in its quest for political power.
Maria Caulfield, who served as the health minister during the last Conservative government from 2022 to 2024, has left her party to join Farage’s movement, she announced Tuesday. This marks the second notable defection in two days, following current MP Danny Kruger’s decision to switch to the Farage faction.
The movement of a prominent figure like Kruger is seen as a significant development, possibly opening the floodgates for others to follow, indicating that it’s now socially and politically acceptable for more politicians to make a similar jump. Caulfield noted that her involvement with the reforms started a month ago, but it was only made public today.
After resigning from Congress in 2024, Caulfield returned to her previous role as a specialized cancer research nurse. She was honored by the king for her “political and public service.” Recently, she paid tribute on social media to assassinated political activist Charlie Kirk, expressing sorrow over his death and calling for courage in faith.
In the past, Caulfield has defended traditional school dress codes against new gender-neutral policies, which have stirred controversy in the culture wars over transgender issues. In 2024, she celebrated NHS England’s decision to ban the use of adolescent blockers for children.
During an appearance on GB News, Caulfield claimed that “the future is reform,” comparing the current political landscape to the underestimation of the pro-Brexit faction before the historic 2016 referendum. “They are shocked,” she predicted.
Caulfield criticized Conservatives for failing to effectively utilize Brexit, saying, “People feel let down by what Brexit was supposed to mean regarding laws, finances, and borders. While we have regained control, we haven’t acted on it… reform is essential to changing the system.”
Farage’s Reform Party currently leads opinion polls in the UK and could become the largest party in Parliament after the upcoming elections. However, Farage noted that while the party is attracting many newcomers without political experience, this could also be a weakness at a time when forming a government requires extensive insider knowledge.
New perspectives can be valuable. Legacy parties, deeply intertwined with civil servants and established legal frameworks, often struggle to implement change even when they desire to. Farage understands the necessity of acquiring insider expertise, which is why he launched his government preparation initiative on Monday, following Kruger’s defection.
Farage highlighted Kruger’s role in helping to identify talent and prepare individuals for what he describes as a monumental challenge.
According to party insiders, Kruger was considered one of the party’s strategic thinkers and held significant influence. On Monday, he explained the daunting task ahead:
The magnitude of change required has not been seen since the establishment of modern civil service in the 19th century. This is a difficult undertaking, and confronting the system necessitates radical approaches. We must always be aware of vested interests defending the status quo.
Reformed Britain may be a radical influence, but it doesn’t innovate for innovation’s sake. Our mission is not just to disrupt the current system but to restore essential systems. We envision a limited government, accountable leadership, and a society that operates for the benefit of its people. Radical change is what the nation needs… and I anticipate serious opposition. Part of our public efforts in the coming months is to clearly communicate what lies ahead.
We don’t want to engage in unnecessary conflicts, but it’s crucial that those in Whitehall understand that changes will come if we succeed… I see that there is resistance, but I aim to approach this constructively… There are quiet individuals within the Civil Service who recognize the system’s corruption and want to support us. So, it’s vital to communicate that we’re not aiming to target everyone and wish to collaborate with those areas of the system that we recognize are outdated.
