A woman has initiated legal action against former Los Angeles Lakers player and coach Byron Scott, claiming he sexually assaulted her in 1987 when she was just 15 and again at 26.
The unnamed woman asserts that Scott attacked her during a team event at Campbell Hall High School in Los Angeles. This lawsuit was initially filed in December 2022 but was modified on May 1 to include allegations of sexual battery and false imprisonment.
The revised complaint marked the first time Scott was named after he sought to have the “John Doe” label removed from court records.
According to the lawsuit, “The victim, attending summer classes at Campbell Hall High School, was assaulted by Byron Scott in a locked supply closet in the gym.”
The Lakers had visited the school in 1987 to engage with students while filming basketball educational content. Scott has publicly denied the allegations, stating through his attorney, Linda Bauermeister, that he believed the woman was of legal age at the time.
“Our clients are devastated by these accusations,” Bauermeister said. “They feel the plaintiff was over 18 and were blindsided by this allegation brought forth decades later. He respected both the girl and woman involved, and this has profoundly affected him and his family.”
Additionally, the woman claims that officials at Campbell Hall High School were negligent and failed to protect her during the incident. She is asking for a jury trial and seeking $25,000 in damages.
