Former Lyons Corner Cameron Sutton turned himself in Sunday after evading law enforcement for several weeks, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office announced.
Sutton had been wanted since March 7 in connection with a domestic violence incident at a residence in Lutz, Florida.
An arrest warrant was issued the same day.
Sutton faces felony charges including domestic assault by strangulation, a third-degree felony punishable by up to five years in prison. ESPN reported.
The sheriff’s office released a short video of Sutton, wearing a white long-sleeved shirt and mustard-colored shorts, surrendering to authorities at the Orient Road Jail.
Sutton arrived at the jail to turn himself in at 8:24 p.m., about a week after his attorney notified police he would appear, according to a news release from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
“After weeks on the run from law enforcement, this man finally made the right choice to turn himself in,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement. “Domestic violence has no place in our community and no one is above the law here in Hillsborough County. My thoughts are with her as she continues to recover from this man’s gruesome actions. My thoughts are with women.”
Sutton was at the Lions facility when the organization learned of the warrant and had been advised to turn himself in, team president Rod Wood told FOX 2 at the NFL owners meeting.
They had suggested he “do the right thing” before the front office met later that day and elected to release him.
The newspaper also reported that a spokesperson for the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said there was evidence to suggest there were injuries on the alleged victim’s body.
Sutton previously signed with the Lions on a three-year deal worth $33 million before the 2023 season after playing six seasons with the Steelers.
Sutton had one interception and 65 total tackles during the 2023-24 regular season.
