Ex-Louisiana mayor Misty Roberts receives 90-day sentence for having sex with a teenager

Former Louisiana Mayor Sentenced for Sexual Offenses

A former mayor from Louisiana, Misty Roberts, was labeled a “predator” by the victim’s mother during a court hearing on Tuesday. Roberts, found guilty of engaging in sexual acts with a teenage boy at a party, has been sentenced to 90 days in jail.

At 43 years old, Roberts, former mayor of DeRidder, was convicted in March for sexual knowledge of a juvenile and lewd acts after her son’s birthday celebration in July 2024, where she had sex with a 16-year-old boy. The prosecution recommended a much harsher penalty, suggesting a maximum prison term of 17 years, as they claimed she had failed to take responsibility for her actions.

During the sentencing, prosecutor Charles Robinson expressed disbelief, stating, “This isn’t just some irresponsible individual. This is someone who managed the city’s budget.” Roberts, however, maintained that she wasn’t fully aware of her responsibilities.

Judge D. Kent Savoie sentenced Roberts to 90 days behind bars, alongside two suspended five-year sentences. He also mandated therapy, registration as a sex offender, and routine drug and alcohol testing.

Before the judge’s decision, the victim’s mother delivered a moving statement, accusing Roberts of taking advantage of a child entrusted to her care. She remarked that “danger doesn’t always appear dangerous,” highlighting how Roberts presented herself with a polished appearance.

In a moment of remorse, Roberts apologized in court, expressing that she would carry the shame for her actions for the rest of her life and extended her condolences to the victim’s family for the distress caused.

During the trial, text messages between Roberts and her teenage son were revealed, discussing the alcohol supply for the party. Other messages from that night indicated her son’s incredulity at the unfolding situation, mentioning that his sister was getting emotional.

Roberts’ daughter testified in court, claiming she had witnessed her mother and the victim in compromising positions at the party. Additionally, Roberts’ ex-husband recounted that she admitted to having sex with the teenage boy, asserting that their children had seen them together. At sentencing, Roberts reflected on her situation, stating she felt like a “disgrace” to the community and expressed concern about not being able to reunite with her children, even suggesting that she’d asked people to cover for her.
