Michigan Senator Joe Tate Launches Senate Campaign
On Sunday, Michigan Senator Joe Tate (D) kicked off his Senate campaign, joining a crowded Democratic primary field.
In an interview, Tate criticized the Trump administration, alleging attempts to cut Social Security funding in various agencies, including the Veterans Affairs Bureau, arguing that it’s causing confusion.
“What we’re witnessing from the Trump administration has been distracting and chaotic,” Tate commented. “It hasn’t been effective in actually helping people lead better lives.”
His campaign launch video, shared on Monday, showcased his background as a former NFL player, an Afghan Marine veteran, and the first Black speaker in the Michigan Capitol.
Tate has also taken aim at President Trump and Republicans, claiming they are “cutting taxes for the wealthy while neglecting the elderly, our children, and fellow veterans.” The video features clips of Trump, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), and Elon Musk.
“On the battlefield and the football field, I’ve never backed down from a fight,” Tate states in the video.
He faces competition in the Democratic primary from Senator Haley Stevens (D-Mich.), State Senator Mallory McMorrow (D), and former public health official Abdul Elle, who have all jumped into the race following Senator Gary Peters’ (D-Mich.) decision not to run again. Additionally, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel (D) is emerging as another potential candidate.
On the Republican side, former Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.), who narrowly lost a Senate race to Senator Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.) last year, is currently the only candidate in the race. Rep. Bill Huizenga (R-Mich.) and former Governor Tudor Dixon are also contemplating their own runs.
The nonpartisan Cook Political Report has categorized this race as “toss-up.”
