Former NATO Supreme Commander James Stavridis said in an interview aired on Sunday following a recent summit in Washington DC that the NATO alliance of allies is the “strongest” in history.
“This is arguably the most powerful thing NATO has ever built,” Stavridis told radio host John Catsimatidis on “The Cats Roundtable.”
“My proof is that we have grown from 12 founding countries to 32 today,” Stavridis added. “Those 32 countries account for half the world’s gross domestic product, three million young men and women in arms, most of them volunteers, and, as the admirals say, 800 major warships at sea and 15,000 fighter jets. A huge, huge force.”
The NATO summit ended on Thursday, and President Biden said at a press conference on the final day that “those who thought NATO’s time was over… [Russian President] Putin invaded Ukraine.”
“Some of Europe’s oldest and deepest fears have come back to life as homicidal maniacs are once again on the march,” the president continued.
In an interview with Catsimatidis, Stavridis said NATO is now “facing up to Vladimir Putin, who is trying to conquer a European country, the first such large-scale invasion since World War II.”
“First of all, I’m glad that NATO exists and that we’re standing up to President Putin,” Stavridis continued.
