Delonte West’s Ongoing Struggles
Delonte West is still facing significant challenges in his life after basketball, with his troubles showing no signs of letting up. Reports indicate that the 42-year-old former NBA player was arrested on December 21, 2025, for allegedly extorting $23 from someone in Belhaven, Virginia, as noted by TMZ Sports.
Following the incident, the alleged victim reportedly informed a police officer nearby that he had recognized West. He has been implicated in other serious offenses as well, including assault and robbery, as detailed in court documents from the New York Post.
After being arrested, West was released on a $1,000 bail and is set to appear in Fairfax County Court on March 16, according to reports.
This arrest adds to a troubling history for West. In November 2025, he was found unconscious and intoxicated on a roadside in the same vicinity, further complicating his already difficult situation. Previously, he was also arrested for trespassing in Huntington about a year ago.
In June 2024, he was taken in for reportedly fleeing from police who were executing a warrant related to a breach of his release conditions and allegedly resisting arrest.
Since retiring from professional basketball in 2015, West has accumulated a lengthy list of legal issues. Drafted 24th overall by the Boston Celtics in 2004, he entered the NBA with promising potential but never really fulfilled it. His career included time with teams like the Seattle SuperSonics, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Dallas Mavericks, as well as brief stints in the D-League and overseas.
In 2008, he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and has faced ongoing struggles with substance abuse and homelessness. In 2020, after a video surfaced showing him begging in Texas, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban reached out to help him. Plans for West to return to the basketball scene through the Big Three League in 2022 did not materialize.
