Doug Martin Dies in Police Custody
Former NFL running back Doug Martin passed away while in the custody of Oakland police early Saturday morning, authorities confirmed. He was 36 years old and had previously played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Oakland Raiders. Following what officials called a “brief struggle” with officers, he was taken to a hospital.
Police received a call around 4:15 a.m. regarding a possible break-in at a residence on Ettrick Street, located near the Auckland Zoo. Shortly after that, dispatchers reported that the alleged intruder was experiencing a “medical emergency,” according to a local news outlet.
Once in custody, Martin reportedly became unresponsive. Paramedics attempted to assist him at the scene before transporting him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The official cause of death has yet to be established.
An investigation into the incident is underway, involving multiple local law enforcement agencies. The officers engaged in the situation have been placed on administrative leave in line with departmental policy.
In a statement shared with the press, Martin’s family expressed their sorrow, stating, “It is with great sadness that we inform you that Doug Martin passed away Saturday morning. The cause of death is unconfirmed at this time.” They have requested privacy during this difficult time.
Doug Martin was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as the 31st overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft after his college career at Boise State University. He enjoyed a seven-season run in the league, spending six years in Tampa Bay before ending his career with the Raiders.
