Ex-NFL player Richard Sherman faces DUI charges

Richard Sherman, a Super Bowl champion, is facing allegations of driving under the influence over a year after his arrest in Washington State.

The former Seattle Seahawk reportedly declined to take a breath test, a substantial misdemeanor in the state, potentially leading to significant penalties, according to the prosecutor’s office speaking to the Seattle Times.

He was stopped by Washington State troopers on I-405 just before 2 a.m. on February 24, 2024, although charges were not filed until the following Tuesday.

Law enforcement claims that the 37-year-old was exceeding the speed limit, driving 79 mph in a 60 mph zone while also swerving between lanes.

Sherman mentioned he had consumed two margaritas prior to the stop and refused the breathalyzer test, as reported by the Seattle Times. He did, however, agree to a voluntary test that could guide the police’s actions.

A warrant for a blood test was granted about two hours after the initial stop.

The charges were only brought to light on Tuesday, just after the prosecutor’s office received the results from the blood tests conducted by the Crime Institute.

This incident follows a previous arrest in July 2021, where Sherman faced charges related to drunk driving and domestic obstruction after an incident involving a former Seahawk trying to enter his in-laws’ home following a car crash in a construction area.

The 2021 case was resolved in March 2022 when Sherman pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor counts in Seattle.

Sherman played for the Seahawks from 2011 to 2017, contributing to the team’s victory in Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014. He then spent three seasons with the San Francisco 49ers and one with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before retiring after the 2021 season.

Since 2022, he has been working as a pre- and post-game analyst for Prime Video’s “Thursday Night Football” and as a panelist for FS1.
