Ex-NFL quarterback Chad Kelly suffers gruesome leg injury teammates can’t look at in CFL playoffs

Former NFL quarterback Chad Kelly suffered a severe foot injury that his teammates couldn't even see during Saturday's Canadian Football League playoffs.

Kelly, a quarterback for the Toronto Argonauts, was playing in his team's semifinal matchup when he was tackled in the third quarter.

As Kelly tried to stand up, he quickly realized that his right leg was broken and was seen trying to prop it up.

This scene was painful to watch as his teammates began to understand what was going on with the signal caller.

One of his teammates fell to the ground, completely distraught as he witnessed Kelly fall to the grass, and appeared shocked by what had happened.

Kelly's night apparently ended with this injury. He completed 11 of 22 for 182 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

However, the Argonauts defeated the Montreal Alouettes 30-28 and advanced to the Gray Cup final against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Kelly ended up fracturing the tibia and fibula in his right ankle after Alouettes defensive end Isaac Adeyemi Berglund landed on his foot while running.

Kelly released a statement Sunday night confirming the injury and predicting a full recovery of three to six months.

“I would like to sincerely thank the doctors and medical staff at Montreal General Hospital who have supported me throughout this experience, as well as my family, teammates and team owners,” Kelly said in a statement. “The incredible outpouring of support from my fans has meant so much to me and I am truly grateful for all the messages I have received.

“I couldn't be more proud of our team for a great win. We're excited to be heading to the Gray Cup. We're disappointed not to be able to play, but we're confident that our team and staff will come away with a great win. I have full confidence in you to bring the Cup home. Thank you again for your wonderful support. See you again soon! ”

Kelly, the final pick in the 2017 NFL Draft and “Mr. Irrelevant,” has been leading the Argonauts since being suspended by the league for nine games for violating its gender-based violence policy.

Kelly was accused of sexual harassment by a former female assistant strength coach in February and is suing the team for wrongful termination.
