Patterson Backs Adams in New York Mayoral Race
Former New York Governor David Patterson announced his support for Mayor Eric Adams in his bid for re-election during a recent radio appearance. He expressed his intent to stand by Adams next year on the steps of city hall.
“I’ll rejoin Mayor Eric Adams at 1 a.m. on the city hall stairs for his re-election,” Patterson shared on the “Cats & Cosby” show, reflecting on his previous endorsement of Adams at the start of the 2024 mayoral campaign.
However, after Adams faced indictment and various challenges in recent months, Patterson shifted his support to former Governor Andrew Cuomo. Despite Cuomo being favored in the Democratic primary, Council member Zoran Mamdani pulled off a surprising victory, changing the landscape of the mayoral race with both Adams and Cuomo now running as independents.
Patterson compared Mamdani’s rise to that of Donald Trump’s political ascent a decade ago, pointing out Mamdani’s strong support and engagement. “The number of people attending his meetings and his registered supporters reminds me of another figure from ten years ago,” he noted.
A recent Siena College Poll revealed Mamdani leading the race with nearly 20% support, significantly ahead of Cuomo, who garnered about 25%. In contrast, Republican candidate Curtis Swa trailed at 12%, with Adams at just 7%.
Cuomo is calling on candidates who think they can pose a threat to Mamdani to unify behind him ahead of next month’s voting, while both Adams and Swa seem intent on continuing their campaigns.
