Tragically, Matt Kimbrel, the younger brother of former New York Mets pitcher Craig Kimbrel, lost his life in a motorcycle accident in Alabama.
The incident occurred around 8 a.m. Saturday in Huntsville, where the 36-year-old collided at a high speed with a dump truck that was leaving Highway 432, according to reports.
Officials stated that Matt was unable to slow down in time and crashed into the back of the truck.
An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is ongoing. Although Matt had played in the minor leagues after being drafted by the Atlanta Braves, it seems that no criminal charges are anticipated at this time.
This unfortunate event happened just a month after Craig Kimbrel, who is 38, signed with the Kansas City Royals, making this the twelfth team in his MLB career.
Craig had joined the Mets on a minor league contract in January but found himself designated for assignment in May, following 14 appearances for the team.
He was originally drafted by the Braves in the 33rd round back in 2007 and made his MLB debut with them in 2010. By 2011, he established himself on the roster, securing Rookie of the Year honors for his record-breaking saves in a season with the club before he was traded to the Padres in 2015.
Matt is survived by his fiancée, Genevieve, to whom he had proposed in a romantic setting at the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
Genevieve expressed her sorrow online soon after the tragic news, stating, “My fiancé passed away, and right now I truly don’t have the words.” She requested privacy and understanding as they navigate this profound loss, encouraging others to keep their family in their thoughts during this difficult time.
