Ex-Patriots star criticizes Bill Belichick for Jordon Hudson situation: 'Hypocrite'

The Patriot Way Isn’t the North Carolina Way

Asante Samuel, a former star with the New England Patriots, has called out his ex-coach, Bill Belichick, labeling him a “hypocrite.” Samuel highlighted the stark differences between Belichick’s coaching style at the Patriots and his current role at North Carolina, especially regarding his relationship with 24-year-old Jordon Hudson, which has drawn national attention.

“The bottom line is that Coach is a hypocrite. He continues to be a hypocrite. He told us to stay away from the media and not to distract his family,” Samuel remarked during an interview with TMZ Sports.

He further questioned the inconsistency: “Coach, is this happening? Coach, where is this coming from? Why can’t we have so much fun when you want to have fun, you know what I mean?”

Samuel’s critiques aren’t unique, and if the Tar Heels fail to achieve consistent success under Belichick, it’s likely more criticism will follow. The contrasts in coaching philosophies are indeed significant.

In Foxboro, Belichick adhered to a straightforward mantra: “Do your job.” This approach left little room for distractions in their quest for championships, which led to tremendous success.

Belichick, now 73, and Tom Brady secured six championships together. Samuel played for Belichick from 2003 to 2007, winning two Super Bowls, before moving on to the Eagles.

Things, however, are quite different in Chapel Hill.

The relationship between Belichick and Hudson frequently makes headlines, with the duo even gracing the cover of Us Magazine, and Hudson sharing their experiences on social media.

While Samuel has criticized Belichick in the past, he still expresses good wishes for his former coach. Yet, there remains an underlying tension.

“Coach is setting the standard here for us. He set the standard for us men. Everybody who respected Coach Belichick and believed in the Belichick way, this is the Belichick way, well, he set the standard,” Samuel stated to TMZ. “At the end of the day, I just believe in being happy in life. You have to be happy. If you don’t care, no one else will either. Even if it’s a little embarrassing, you’ll be happy together, and that’s real.”

Currently, Belichick might have more reason to be cheerful, as the Tar Heels have turned their season around after a rocky start.

North Carolina recently halted a four-game losing streak, winning two in a row, now improving to 4-5 and narrowly missing wins in their last two matches.

As they prepare to face Wake Forest this Saturday, Samuel offered insights into Belichick’s transition. “He might go through some growing pains. He’s been in the NFL for a long time and is now adapting to coaching young athletes in the new NIL era. It might take him some time to adjust,” he noted. “The old ways just aren’t going to cut it anymore. He’s got to evolve a bit.”

Lastly, following Belichick’s announcement on Friday evening that he would not be pursuing the Giants’ head coaching position, it seems he plans to focus on his college coaching career for now. Rumors had circulated regarding a potential move to the Giants due to his past experiences coaching under Bill Parcells.

Belichick expressed deep respect for the New York Giants and the Mara and Tisch families, noting, “The New York Giants have played an important role in my life and my coaching career. It has been an honor for me to work for the Mara family and be a member of Coach Parcells’ staff for over a decade. However, despite rumors, I have never pursued and will not pursue an NFL head coaching position.”
