Obama Donates Signed Muhammad Ali Boxing Gloves to Presidential Library
Former President Barack Obama is set to donate a pair of boxing gloves, signed by the legendary Muhammad Ali, to the Presidential Library. The announcement was made by the Obama Foundation on Wednesday.
The foundation noted, “Ali’s story inspired President Obama, who displayed these engraved red boxing gloves from Everlast in the White House throughout his presidency.” They served as a reminder of Ali’s extraordinary strength and courage in overcoming challenges.
After Ali passed away in 2016, Obama expressed admiration for him, calling attention to how Ali “fought for what was right” and his impact on modern America. Though he held Ali in high regard, Obama did not attend the boxing icon’s funeral due to scheduling conflicts.
The Obama Presidential Center has been a contentious topic since it was announced in 2015. There have been various issues raised, like legal battles over public land use and worries about gentrification in Chicago’s South Side. Recent criticisms have also pointed to design flaws in the center, including problems with the towering museum’s text being hard to read.
A Fox News Digital investigation revealed that taxpayers are covering rising public infrastructure expenses associated with this project. Despite numerous inquiries, no government agency has been able to provide a total estimated cost for public funds linked to the center’s development.
In response to the scrutiny, the Obama Foundation, responsible for funding the center’s construction, defended the project. A spokesperson stated that they are investing $850 million in private funds not just to build the center, but also to support the communities that played a role in the Obamas’ story.
Emily Bittner, a representative from the foundation, explained, “After decades of underinvestment on Chicago’s South Side, the center aims to foster investment from both public and private sources to create economic opportunities, jobs, and improved public spaces for residents.”
