Man Killed in Utah Protest Shooting
Authorities have reported that a man was shot and killed during a protest in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. This tragic incident unfolded around 7:56 PM on a Saturday, amidst a significant gathering of approximately 10,000 demonstrators.
A sergeant from the Salt Lake City Police Department, who was part of the motor vehicle unit, first heard the gunfire during the event. In a statement, police described the shooting as a “deeply troubling act of violence” with no place in public gatherings.
Panic quickly ensued; many protesters fled for safety, finding refuge behind cars and barriers nearby. Police officers, including members of the SWAT team, arrived on the scene where they discovered the victim suffering from a gunshot wound. Life-saving measures were immediately applied, but unfortunately, the victim was pronounced dead shortly after reaching the hospital.
The victim was identified as Arthur Folasa a Lu. Law enforcement indicated that Lou was simply an innocent bystander and not the intended target of the shooting.
Shortly after the incident, attendees flagged down police, reporting a suspicious 24-year-old man named Arturo Gamboa. He was described as armed and wearing a black mask among the crowd. Protesters alerted officers about a firearm they found near where Gamboa was crouched—a weapon resembling an AR-15.
Peacekeeping members present at the protest noted that Gamboa had been acting suspiciously prior to the shooting. They observed him move away from the crowd and into a less populated area, where he allegedly retrieved the rifle from his backpack.
As the situation escalated, witnesses recounted that Gamboa raised the rifle and ran towards the crowd with it pointed in a shooting position, ignoring commands to drop the weapon. In response, a peacekeeping member fired at him, but tragically, one of the rounds struck Lou instead.
Following the shooting, Gamboa was taken into custody and is currently charged with murder. The investigation remains active, and police have noted that they are working diligently to understand the circumstances that led to this loss of life.
Salt Lake City Police Chief Brian Red expressed condolences to Lou’s family and the broader community, emphasizing that such acts should not instill fear. He acknowledged the emotional impact of this traumatic incident on local residents.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox also condemned the violence, stating on social media that there is no place for such actions in societal gatherings. He confirmed ongoing cooperation with law enforcement for accountability.
Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall described the protest’s intent as a peaceful expression meant to remain undeterred by acts of violence.
Lou, a known fashion designer, had previously appeared on the reality show “Project Runway.” He is survived by his wife.
The police department has requested anyone who captured photos or videos during the incident to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation.
