George Santos Begins Prison Sentence
New York State Representative George Santos reported to federal prison on Friday after pleading guilty to felony fraud in August 2024. He is set to serve an 87-month sentence and was expelled from Congress in December 2023.
A spokesman for the Federal Prison Bureau confirmed that Santos turned himself in at the Federal Correctional Institution Fairton in New Jersey. His guilty plea involved charges of wire fraud and aggravated identity theft.
Earlier, Breitbart News indicated that US District Judge Joanna Seybert had sentenced various dishonest Republican House members to more than seven years in prison and imposed over $373,000 in restitution, along with two years of supervised release.
The House of Representatives voted 311-114 to expel Santos, making it the first instance of such an ousting since former Representative Jim Traficant was removed after his conviction.
His expulsion came after revealing findings from the House Ethics Committee, which indicated that Santos had submitted false reports to the Federal Election Commission and misused campaign funds for personal expenses. Reports suggest he spent money on items like Botox treatments.
Interestingly, Santos survived two earlier attempts to remove him from office, but a subsequent report from the Ethics Committee proved damaging. It detailed his violations of ethics laws in relation to his financial disclosures.
He admitted to aggravated wire fraud in August 2024, after reaching a judicial agreement to avoid trial on 23 criminal charges. Initially, he faced 13 charges, but prosecutors later added another ten.
Before entering prison, Santos expressed fears about violence and potential death while incarcerated. In an interview with conservative commentator Tucker Carlson, he shared his anxieties, stating, “They put me in a violent prison… I’m not a guy on the street. I don’t know how to fight.”
