Chicago White Sox Champion Bobby Jenks Passes Away at 44

Bobby Jenks, a pivotal member of the Chicago White Sox’s 2005 World Series championship team, died on Saturday at the age of 44. He had been battling adenocarcinoma, a form of stomach cancer.

“Today, we mourn the loss of an iconic member of the White Sox family,” expressed White Sox Chairman Jerry Reindorf in a statement.

Jenks’s contributions during his time with the Sox, especially in the 2005 postseason, left a lasting impact. He was fully aware, along with his family, that his battle with cancer was a significant challenge.

Selected by the White Sox as a fifth-round pick from high school in 2000, Jenks burst onto the Major League Baseball scene in 2005. In his debut season, he played in 32 games and recorded an impressive ERA of 2.75, showcasing his talent for striking out 11.4 batters per nine innings.

His rise was swift, leading him to take on the closer role just in time for the postseason. Jenks appeared in all four games of the World Series, helping to end the Sox’s championship drought that had lasted since 1917.

He was recognized as an All-Star in both 2006 and 2007, finishing his career with a 3.53 ERA. After retiring in 2011, Jenks had spent six of his seven seasons with the White Sox and played one season with the Boston Red Sox. Notably, he became the second-youngest pitcher to achieve 40 consecutive saves and set a record in 2007 for retiring 41 straight batters.

Sadly, his career was marred by struggles with alcoholism and drug addiction, but he made significant strides in 2012 to manage these challenges. Jenks was undergoing treatment in Portugal when he passed away. Earlier this year, he had lost his home in a wildfire in Pallisard, which likely intensified his struggles.

He is survived by his wife and six children, four of whom are from previous marriages.
