Rex Heuerman’s Ex-Wife Unveils Chilling Details in Documentary
RIVERHEAD, N.Y. — In a recent documentary, the ex-wife of confessed serial killer Rex Heuerman shared shocking insights regarding a “kill room” he had constructed in their home’s basement. This is reportedly where he confessed to murdering seven of his eight known victims.
Asa Ellerup discussed these revelations in the latest episode of Peacock’s “Gilgo Beach Killer: House of Secrets,” which was released recently. She stated, “The harsh reality is that Rex told me he disinterred bodies in this room. I am here because I feel a sense of spirituality, trying in my own way to communicate to these victims that I sincerely regret what they endured.”
Ellerup shared that she moved into the house about a month before her ex-husband entered a guilty plea and has visited him multiple times since his confession.
“Each night, my dreams torment me,” she admitted. “This will stick with me forever. There won’t be any justice for anyone, and I can’t forget this.”
Despite everything, she expressed a desire to understand her ex-husband psychologically. “I want to know why Rex killed these women and what triggered it,” she reflected. “Now, I perceive a different kind of evil in him.”
Her attorney, Bob Macedonio, mentioned that Ellerup is grappling with the revelation that her long-time husband was living a double life as one of the most notorious serial killers in recent history.
“It doesn’t mean she wishes to understand Rex the killer; rather, she’s focusing on this side of him that she missed for thirty years. It’s more about knowing herself than knowing him,” he elaborated.
Ellerup also recounted the moment Rex confessed to the murders before his situation changed legally. He admitted to killing eight people, but only seven charges were brought against him at that time.
On April 8, Heuerman, aged 62 and a former architect from New York City, pled guilty to the murders of seven women, including Melissa Barthelemy and Megan Waterman. He acknowledged an additional murder, which was unprovoked, as well.
“Coming to terms with the reality that Rex Heuerman is the Gilgo Beach serial killer has been profoundly emotional and painful,” Macedonio noted. “Ms. Ellerup aims to continue focusing on the victims and the unmeasurable loss their families have suffered.”
The details surrounding each crime are harrowing. Each victim was strangled, and some experienced additional torment. Most bodies were found along Ocean Parkway, not far from New York City, with the first victim, Ms. Costilla, discovered shortly after her disappearance in late 1993.
Remarkably, she was the only person Heuerman did not kill at his home in Massapequa Park. He later took her life in a vehicle, recovered by law enforcement in Pennsylvania, according to family sources.
Heuerman was apprehended outside his residence and maintained his innocence for almost three years, with a trial set for September.
The shocking case gained wider attention when the ominous disappearance of Shanann Gilbert in 2010 led to the discovery of ten other bodies, seven of which Heuerman confessed to killing. The police originally classified Gilbert’s death as an accidental drowning, while another case involving the murder of Tanya Jackson and her young daughter was attributed to a different suspect.
