Val Whiting, a former WNBA player and two-time national champion at Stanford University, clarified her position on transgender women’s sports participation Saturday night.

“While many of our basketball sisters feel otherwise, trans women do not belong in women’s sports,” Whiting wrote. “It’s not fair or safe for biological women. To allow trans women to compete in competition, we need other solutions besides having them compete against biological women.”
Whiting played in the American Basketball League and the Women’s National Basketball League before the WNBA was formed. She then played for the Detroit Shock and Minnesota Lynx.
She played around the same time as Staley. The Basketball Hall of Famer played for the Charlotte Sting. Staley played over seven seasons with the Sting and then briefly played with the Houston Comets.
