Tragic American chess grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky faced unfounded cheating accusations leading up to his death, according to his devastated mother. The former world champion who brought forth these allegations is currently under scrutiny for potential disciplinary actions.
Naroditsky’s unexpected passing was reported on Monday. He had been embroiled in a bitter dispute with former grandmaster Vladimir Kramnik ever since Kramnik accused him of cheating in online chess matches.
Born in California, Naroditsky became a grandmaster at just 18. He vehemently denied any wrongdoing and claimed that Kramnik was attempting to destroy his life.
“Nothing was more important to Daniel than his dignity and reputation as a chess player,” Elena Naroditsky, his grieving mother, shared with the media. “Daniel was very protective,” she added, emphasizing his strong sense of honor.
“The entire world was behind Daniel. He was motivated to prove that he wasn’t the person he was accused of being,” she explained, expressing anger over the unfounded claims. These allegations prompted the International Chess Federation to consider actions against Kramnik for his persistent, baseless accusations.
Arkady Dvorkovich, President of the International Chess Federation, stated that all public remarks made by Kramnik before and after Naroditsky’s death have been referred to the Ethics and Discipline Committee for evaluation.
He pledged that the federation would take “appropriate action” if proof of harassment or bullying surfaces. The organization has the authority to penalize players under the Anti-Cheating Act for making unfounded accusations.
This investigation follows several grandmasters denouncing Kramnik’s behavior, accusing him of harassing Naroditsky and attempting to tarnish his image.
In his last livestream on Saturday, Naroditsky appeared disoriented and mentioned the detrimental impact of Kramnik’s allegations. “Since the Kramnik incident, I feel like when things start going well, people harbor negative intentions. It’s just that the effects linger,” he said.
The specifics surrounding Naroditsky’s cause of death have yet to be disclosed.
