Ex-WWE star captures GCW World Championship at Homecoming

Joseph Sawyer Wins GCW Championship at Homecoming

Atlantic City, New Jersey – Saturday night marked a significant return for Joseph Sawyer, formerly recognized as Joe Gacy. He stepped back into the ring at Game Changer Wrestling’s (GCW) Homecoming Night 1, held at the Showboat Resort in Atlantic City, where he triumphed over Atticus Cogar to seize the GCW World Championship.

Immediately after his victory, Sawyer remarked to the audience, “What a terrible homecoming.” It’s a sentiment that resonated, perhaps due to the chaos of the night.

This match was Sawyer’s first in GCW since his appearance as Psycho Joe in 2020. The Franklin, N.J. native engaged in a brutal clash with Cogar, marked by vicious chair shots and multiple attempts from Cogar to break through a door positioned in the corner of the ring.

Surprisingly, the evening also served as a tribute to the late Bray Wyatt. Cogar’s entrance music paid homage to the former WWE star who passed away unexpectedly in August 2023. Additionally, Cogar donned a jacket and mask as a sign of respect.

To finish the match, Sawyer executed a Sister Abigail DDT, sending the crowd into a frenzy. One fan even began pounding on the ring apron in excitement as Sawyer celebrated.

The violence in the ring only hinted at the chaos throughout the night. From light tubes to chains, and barbed wire tables—everything you might expect from a hardcore wrestling event appeared.

In another match, Otis Koger successfully defended his GCW Ultraviolent Championship against Anakin Murphy, who notably showcased gear reminiscent of My Chemical Romance’s frontman, Gerard Way. Despite Koger’s efforts to finish off the determined Murphy, it was clear that the night belonged to Koger, who later learned he had a new contender seeking his title.

Another brutal highlight came from the encounter between Vipres and Christian Napier, who battled in a chola chain match. The two wrestlers were bound together by chains, resulting in an intense showdown. Napier managed to inflict significant damage but Vipres ultimately prevailed, forcing Napier to tap out after wrapping a chain around his face.

In perhaps one of the night’s most intense moments, Nick Gage, Nino Extremo, and Sicko the Clown triumphed over Connor Claxton, Dr. Reducted, and Jimmy Lloyd in a six-man deathmatch. Claxton’s daring move onto the scaffolding ended up with him suffering an injury, but he was later reported to be okay after a hospital visit.

KJ Orso and Sam Stackhouse clinched the GCW Tag Team Championship, defeating Busta and the Brain. Meanwhile, Joey Janela avoided a potential retirement by defeating Marco Stunt with assistance from Ryan O’Neal.

GCW Homecoming Night 2 is scheduled for Sunday at the same venue, with fans able to catch the action on Triller TV+.
