Exclusive — Breitbart News’s Kristina Wong Firsthand Account of Maui Fires: Flames Were ‘Enormous’

Wildfires on Maui, Hawaii “lighted up the entire sky” as islanders tried to figure out what was going on without cell phone service, internet or power, according to Breitbart News. Christina Wong said. Breitbart News DailyBecause she was actually on the island when the disaster happened.

Wong said he was on Maui, staying at a resort in Kaanapali, about an eight-minute drive from Lahaina. She arrived on her plane on Monday afternoon, but the wind was so bad that things fell apart “quickly,” she said.

She said there was a power outage Monday night through Tuesday morning, and her phone lines were down. On Tuesday she heard about the bushfires and she walked to a nearby town, but all but one Bobaty store were closed and that was the only one open, so they all went there. Ta.

“Monday night, Tuesday morning, I remember waking up very early because of the power outage. There was no phone service,” she said, explaining that when she woke up a few hours later there was still no electricity, no phone service, no internet.

She said the fire gathered momentum around noon Tuesday and was “in full swing” by 6-7 p.m.

“So I could see the Lahaina fires from where we were, and it was really, really bad. The flames were really high. They were really huge. I’ve never seen anything like that before.” I was actually a little scared because the whole sky had lightened and it looked pretty close, but I was still really panicked because there was no one at the resort,” she said, adding: I explained that power, internet and phone service were down that day. Food became scarce and people started buying dry food.

Evacuations began on Thursday morning, with “hundreds” of people from resorts gathering on buses to leave the island.

Wong recalled talking to one of the hotel staff, who said locals and tourists were literally left in the dark, unaware of the extent of the devastation, and realized what was happening.

“He said our main town was gone. I knew it was terrible,” Wong said, adding, “Nobody knew how many people were killed.”
