Exclusive–Massie Wants Boehner-Type Resignation from Johnson So GOP Can Pick Successor

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) told SiriusXM. Breitbart News Daily House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) said he is “not prepared” for the speakership and laid out his preferred scenario in which Johnson would agree to step down once the Republican conference agrees on a replacement.

Massey has joined Breitbart News Daily Host Mike Slater made the remarks Wednesday, a day after he called on Johnson to resign and co-sponsored a motion by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) to resign. The motion is not privileged, but Greene can make it privileged at any time and force the House to consider it within two days.

When Mr. Slater asked what Mr. Johnson’s problems were as chairman, Mr. Massey insisted, “Mr. Johnson just isn’t the right person for the job,” and said that Mr. Johnson was constantly being swayed by Democrats in negotiations. Ta.

“Every negotiation he’s had with Chuck Schumer or Joe Biden hasn’t gotten him anything in return. Either he’s bad at negotiating or he’s negotiating for their side,” Massey said. said.

Breitbart · Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) – April 17, 2024

“He accomplished an omnibus that broke Nancy Pelosi’s spending records. He reauthorized FISA without a warrant. Now he has completed the trifecta of passing Ukraine spending without doing anything to police the border. “I’m aiming for it,” he continued. “Not only is the House poorly run, but there will be three strikes.”

In particular, Rep. Jim Banks (R-Ind.) and Rep. Scott Perry (R-Pennsylvania) expressed frustration Wednesday with a foreign aid framework that ignores U.S. border security. Banks called it “madness.”

Massey said he and Greene’s motion to resign against Johnson was followed by former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) in October when Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) and seven other Republicans ) and explained how it differs from the motion used to expel him.

He and Mr Green hope that Mr Johnson will agree to step down once the meeting agrees on a new chair. That would avoid the kind of chaos that left the House without a speaker for weeks after Mr. McCarthy now had an even smaller one-seat majority.

“We don’t want to have the opportunity to have Hakeem Jeffries as a speaker,” Massey stressed. “Even if we don’t get anything done in the Senate, we want to continue to subpoena, we want to continue to have hearings, we want to continue passing legislation, and we want to continue to have that speaker preside.”

“The way to do that is if Mike Johnson announces his resignation eight weeks from now, or at some point when he can do so in a closed-door meeting rather than having to fudge business with Democrats on the floor. “Mike Johnson will resign as soon as the Republican convention can unanimously elect a nominee.”

Massey added that this scenario would mirror former Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), who resigned in 2015 following a motion to resign.

“There’s precedent for this. This happened when John Boehner decided to clean out the barn and mess with conservatives and our base by reauthorizing the Export-Import Bank and passing an omnibus. I did it,’” Massey recalled. “He said, ‘Because of all the bad things I’ve done, I’m resigning and I’m going to give you time to elect a new chairman.'” That’s what Mike Johnson should have done, and what I should have done. That’s why he co-sponsored Marjorie Taylor Greene’s motion to resign. ”

Meanwhile, Mr Massey said that he and Mr Green were “hoping to get more co-sponsors” and that if around five or six MPs supported the proposal, “it would be a good idea for Mr Johnson to resign.” It’s clear that there is a need.”
