Despite the historically narrow majority of GOP's home, speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said in an exclusive interview Monday that he plans to resort solely to rely on Republicans to ease the settlement. told Blaze News.
The House is scheduled to vote for the settlement tomorrow night, establishing the budget blueprint for President Donald Trump's first American agenda. Johnson's “Big, Beautiful Bill” has gained support from Trump, but Republicans can only afford to lose one vote on the settlement. Still, Johnson told Blaze News that all his efforts are focused on uniting Republicans behind the budget resolution.
“I'm sure it will work in the end.”
“Reconciliation is always, by definition, partisan exercises, unlike everything else that's happening in Congress,” Johnson told Blaze News. “It's trying to reflect all our red meat policies, everything we ran, everything we exercised, everything we ran, that President Trump ran. It's America's first agenda.”
“We're not going to have Democrats, meaning we have to have all the Republicans,” Johnson added.
Republicans were re-elected with a narrower majority compared to previous Congress, but Trump recruited two members of Congress and further reduced the GOP margin.
Johnson and the Republican leaders have devoted almost a year of negotiations to ensure that their entire meeting will delay the settlement due to an increasingly small margin.
“It's a lot of work, a lot of heavy work, a high interest, but it's a great reward when we get it done.”
Still, there are a few Hesitant Inside the GOP. On the one hand, some medium Republicans in the purple and blue districts say budget cuts have gone too far, but the fiscal Hawks within the GOP say the cuts have not progressed well. But despite the ideologically diverse conference, Johnson is sure Republicans will eventually appear on the same page.
“Finally, I'm sure it will work,” Johnson told Blaze News. “None of us is going to get everything we want, but we can pass on what we think will be one of the most consequential legislation in years, perhaps decades. .
“It's a lot of work, a lot of heavy work, a high interest, but it's a huge reward when we accomplish it,” Johnson added.
