Potential Issues of Sleeping with Wet Hair

Experts in skin and hair care highlight the unexpected consequences of going to bed with damp hair. According to hair stylist Briana Delvecchio from Ashley Lauren Beauty Lounge in New York, she frequently warns her clients about the risks associated with this habit.

When hair is wet, its hydrogen bonds become less stable, making it more elastic and prone to damage. Delvecchio notes that the combination of wet hair and friction from the pillowcase can lead to split ends, tangles, and long-lasting damage.

Another concern is the impact on the scalp. A damp scalp trapped against a pillow creates a warm, moist environment that can encourage fungal growth and bacteria, leading to irritation and even excess oiliness by morning.

Delvecchio also points out that this moisture can transfer to the pillowcase, which might contain bacteria and oils that can trigger breakouts or flare-ups for those with sensitive skin.

Dr. Noah Glacci, a dermatologist, echoes these concerns, mentioning that while sleeping with wet hair isn’t inherently harmful, it raises dermatological and hair health issues. He emphasizes that friction from the pillow can worsen the vulnerability of wet hair.

Furthermore, a consistently damp scalp can lead to conditions like seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff, as the moisture creates an inviting environment for a yeast called Malassezia that is typically found on the scalp.

Experts warn that it could even result in folliculitis, a fungal infection particularly in individuals with oily scalps or damaged skin barriers, leading to irritation and inflammation.

To mitigate these issues, Delvecchio suggests drying hair thoroughly before bed, as simple changes in routine can significantly benefit hair, scalp, and skin health.
